When Should You Close a Pool in Peekskill?

Close your Peekskill pool once the water holds below about 65°F for several days running — usually mid-October to early November in Westchester County. An Angel’s Pools closing lowers the water, clears and plugs the lines, adds winter chemicals and fits your safety cover. Call (914) 737-1445 or request a quote online.

Why Do Peekskill Pools Need a Proper Closing?

Westchester County winters swing back and forth across freezing. Water left in a return line expands when it freezes and splits the pipe, and the same freeze-thaw cycle lifts coping stones and works mortar joints loose around the deck. Neither shows up until spring, and both cost more than the closing did.

Peekskill is where our yard is, so this is the ground we know best. The city climbs steeply back from the Hudson, and a great many pools here sit on cut-and-fill ground with the deck carried on a retaining wall. That matters at closing: a deck held up by a wall takes the freeze-thaw cycle through the wall as well as the slab, and coping that has begun to lift is telling you about drainage behind it, not just about the stone.

The wooded slopes above town also mean a heavy leaf load, and leaves that sink before the cover goes on are the ones that stain plaster and feed algae under the ice. Being ten minutes away is the practical advantage here — we can time your closing to the leaf drop rather than to a calendar slot booked weeks out.

What’s Included in Our Peekskill Pool Closing?

01

Lower the water level to the right height for the winter.

02

Clear and plug the lines so nothing is left in the plumbing to freeze and split. Water left in a return line is the expensive winter mistake, and it is entirely avoidable.

03

Add winter chemicals so the water keeps through to spring.

04

Fit the safety cover over a pool that is ready to sit until opening day.

Safety covers

Safety Covers for Peekskill Pools

A safety cover keeps the pool clean through the off-season and guards against accidental intrusion by children, pets and wildlife. We fit one at every closing, and we install and service GLI Secur-A-Pool covers.

New York sets the safety rules statewide rather than town by town: a barrier at least 48 inches high with no more than two inches of gap underneath, gates that self-close and self-latch, and a pool alarm on any residential pool built since December 2006. Where a wall of the house forms part of that barrier, a powered safety cover is one of the approved alternatives — which is worth knowing before you replace a cover that is doing a job beyond keeping leaves out.

Pool and Stonework From One Crew

Most pool companies hand the stonework to a subcontractor, and most masons will not touch water chemistry. We do both in-house — coping repair and replacement, stone patios and pool decks — so when the freeze-thaw cycle lifts a coping stone, the people who look after the water are the people who reset the stone. No second contractor, no finger-pointing. Angel Lojano founded Angel’s Pools in 1998 and still oversees every project himself.

Winter is the time to plan what you want ready for opening day: a patio or pool deck, re-plastering, or a fireplace. Our guide to travertine, bluestone and pavers covers the choice.

FAQ

Peekskill Pool Closing Questions, Answered

When should I close my pool in Peekskill?

Once the water holds below about 65°F for several days running — usually mid-October to early November here. Peekskill sits on the Hudson with a lot of tree cover above it, so the practical trigger is often the leaf drop rather than the thermometer: closing over a pool already full of sunk leaves is how plaster gets stained.

How much does it cost to close a pool in Peekskill?

It depends on the size of the pool and what the closing involves. We do not publish prices: every pool is quoted after an on-site look rather than over the phone, so the number you get is the number you pay. Call (914) 737-1445 — we are based in Peekskill, so arranging a visit here is straightforward.

Do you need a permit for a pool in Peekskill?

Pool work in the city is permitted through the City of Peekskill, and the safety requirements themselves are set by New York State rather than locally: a barrier at least 48 inches high, no more than two inches of gap beneath it, self-closing and self-latching gates, and a pool alarm on residential pools built since December 2006. Check the current detail with the city before you build.

My pool deck sits on a retaining wall and the coping is lifting. Is that a closing problem?

It is worth looking at before the winter rather than after. Lifting coping on a retained deck usually points at water getting behind the wall and freezing, so the stone is a symptom. We do pool care and masonry with the same crew, so we can look at the coping and the wall on the same visit instead of sending you to a mason in spring.

Is it too late to close my pool in November?

Not necessarily, but it is close. The risk in November is an overnight freeze reaching water still sitting in the plumbing, which splits pipes and cracks equipment. Call as soon as you can — if a freeze is forecast, say so and we will tell you honestly where you stand.

What is the best time of year to replaster a pool?

The off-season. With the pool closed and the water down, re-plastering, waterline tile and coping can be done without losing swim time, and the work is finished before opening day. Booking in winter also means you are not waiting behind the spring rush.
