When Should You Close a Pool in Stamford?

Close your Stamford pool once the water holds below about 65°F for several days running — usually mid-October to early November in Fairfield County. An Angel’s Pools closing lowers the water, clears and plugs the lines, adds winter chemicals and fits your safety cover. Call (914) 737-1445 or request a quote online.

Why Do Stamford Pools Need a Proper Closing?

Fairfield County winters swing back and forth across freezing. Water left in a return line expands when it freezes and splits the pipe, and the same freeze-thaw cycle lifts coping stones and works mortar joints loose around the deck. Neither shows up until spring, and both cost more than the closing did.

Stamford runs a long way inland from Long Island Sound, and the north of the city looks nothing like the south. North Stamford is wooded, hilly and built on large lots; down near the water the lots are tighter and the air is salty. The two ends close on different schedules and with different things to watch — leaf load and distance up north, corroded metal and hardware down by the Sound.

Stamford is in Connecticut, so the Connecticut barrier rules apply rather than the New York ones used across the state line: at least 48 inches above grade, no more than two inches of clearance underneath, and pedestrian gates that open outward away from the water. Permits run through the city rather than a town or village board, and it is worth confirming the current requirements with the city building department before starting work.

What’s Included in Our Stamford Pool Closing?

01

Lower the water level to the right height for the winter.

02

Clear and plug the lines so nothing is left in the plumbing to freeze and split. Water left in a return line is the expensive winter mistake, and it is entirely avoidable.

03

Add winter chemicals so the water keeps through to spring.

04

Fit the safety cover over a pool that is ready to sit until opening day.

Safety Covers for Stamford Pools

A safety cover keeps the pool clean through the off-season and guards against accidental intrusion by children, pets and wildlife. We fit one at every closing, and we install and service GLI Secur-A-Pool covers.

Connecticut sets the barrier rules statewide: at least 48 inches above grade, no more than two inches of clearance underneath, openings too small to pass a four-inch sphere, and pedestrian gates that open outward away from the water and latch themselves. A cover is not a substitute for that barrier, but a cover that no longer sits tight is still the thing most likely to fail you over a winter.

Pool and Stonework From One Crew

Most pool companies hand the stonework to a subcontractor, and most masons will not touch water chemistry. We do both in-house — coping repair and replacement, stone patios and pool decks — so when the freeze-thaw cycle lifts a coping stone, the people who look after the water are the people who reset the stone. No second contractor, no finger-pointing. Angel Lojano founded Angel’s Pools in 1998 and still oversees every project himself.

Winter is the time to plan what you want ready for opening day: a patio or pool deck, re-plastering, or a fireplace. Our guide to travertine, bluestone and pavers covers the choice.

FAQ

Stamford Pool Closing Questions, Answered

When should I close my pool in Stamford?

Once the water holds below about 65°F for several days running. North Stamford is higher, wooded and colder, and usually ready before the shoreline neighbourhoods, which hold their warmth into early November — so the right date depends on which end of the city you are in.

Are the pool fence rules the same as in New York?

Similar, not identical. Connecticut sets its barrier requirements statewide: at least 48 inches above grade, no more than two inches of clearance underneath, openings too small to pass a four-inch sphere, and pedestrian gates that open outward away from the pool and latch themselves. Confirm the current detail with the City of Stamford building department before you build.

How much does it cost to close a pool in Stamford?

It depends on the size of the pool and what the closing involves. We do not publish prices: every pool is quoted after an on-site look rather than over the phone, so the number you get is the number you pay. Call (914) 737-1445 and we will arrange a visit.

Does being near the Sound change how a pool should be closed?

It changes what gets checked. Salt air works on metal first — ladder anchors, light rings, heater cabinets, cover hardware and springs — so on a shoreline closing the fixings get as much attention as the plumbing. Up in North Stamford the bigger issue is leaf load on the cover.

My cover sags under wet leaves in North Stamford. What can be done?

A cover that pools water in the middle is either tired or wrongly tensioned, and under heavy tree cover it will not survive the season that way. We install and service safety covers, including GLI Secur-A-Pool, so it is worth having yours looked at before the leaf drop rather than after.

What is the best time of year to replaster a pool?

The off-season. With the pool closed and the water down, re-plastering, waterline tile and coping can be done without losing swim time, and the work is finished before opening day. Booking in winter also means you are not waiting behind the spring rush.
